California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Economist George Dalton was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 2, 1926. Much of Dalton's writing grew out of Polanyi's views on economics, especially in primitive and developing societies, and he became well known as a somewhat acerbic defender of Polanyi's approach to economic anthropology.
